Feel the Music: Art that Captures Experience

Age: open (1st through 12th grade)

Artist Inspiration: William Anastasi and the Abstract Expressionists

Objective: To explore the formal element of line quality and Abstract Expressionism.

Project Description:

William Anastasi’s Subway Drawings chart his experience riding a subway. To make them, he would close his eyes and hold two pens or pencils over a piece of paper and let train rock him back and form. The resulting images are abstractions of a journey from one place to another. To further explore capturing an experience in art, our class practiced closing their eyes and drawing while listening to music. Instead of the rocking of a subway, students let the beat and their emotional responses to the music guide their hands.
