Product Development and Ad Design

Age: 7th and 8th grade visual art

Objective:

  • Students will be able to discuss how photography can be used to help sell a product.
  • Students will be able to construct a 3D “product” out of recycled materials that follows a sketch.
  • Students will be able to promote their unique product design using photography and graphic design.

Project Description:

Day 1:

Introduce photography as a method of selling products. Have students look at ads that use photography in different ways:

  • Direct - formal, often digitally embellished, photograph of product
  • Indirect - photograph depicting a lifestyle the product implies
  • Transformative - photograph uses the product in a “clever” way
  • Endorsement - a celebrity or authority is depicted endorsing the product

Have students brainstorm what product they will build out of recycled materials.

  • Will it be something that exists already?
  • Will it be a new product?
  • What will the scale be?
  • What materials could be used?

Day 2 - 4:

  1. Have students continue to look at examples of advertisements using photography. Have students discuss why or why not some are successful.
  2. Have students begin to construct their products out of recycled materials.
  3. Students will complete a Fact Sheet about their product to help design an ad campaign.

Day 5:

  1. Students will finish the construction of their products out of recycled materials and complete the Fact Sheet if they haven’t already.

Day 6 - 8:

  1. Students will sketch a plan for an ad (direct, indirect, transformative, or endorsement).
  2. Students will photograph their products and construct an ad using collage or photoshop.
