About Face
Age: 1st-5th grade
Objective: To explore portraiture through observational drawing and blind contour line drawing. To create a mixed media artwork.
Project Description: After a lesson on anatomical proportions, students sketched and then painted portraits of their classmates from observation. After their portraits were completed, students were instructed to create a blind contour drawing of their subject on top of their paintings. By combining the representational portrait with the blind contour drawing, students were pushed to examine the successes and failures of each attempt at creating a likeness.
